choosing the right career when starting university

It is possible that the title “choosing the right career when starting university” may sound a little presumptuous but these days it is always good to have an idea of where your career path is likely to progress.

Most people aren’t just doing ‘a job’ because they just happen to have falling into that line of work. They have chosen a path that has led them to where they are today.

Obviously one of the best examples of this sort of career progression would be a medical consultant, who would have taken a particular educational path that led to a career based on medicine. In order to be a medical consultant it is likely that he or she would have spent at least five years at a University’s medical school, and then many years working at various posts in the medical profession progressing through the organisation until he or she achieved their goal.

There is noting haphazard about that form of career progression and the individual who manages to get to the top of their profession would have had a very good idea when starting University exactly where he or she wanted to end up.

If you have a flair for a particular subject from Computer Science to Ancient History it is likely that getting into University will not be a great problem. Once you have achieved that it is always a good idea to review your career options and make you chose at the beginning of your University career it will give you something to aim at.

However always remember that just because we want to achieve something it doesn’t mean we will, you may have decided that what you want to do as a career in your first year of University has no relevance at the end of your first degree so do be flexible.
